ALBERT NELSON GAMBELL.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock this morning at the A.J. Rose chapel for Albert Nelson Gambell, long active in public and fraternal life here, who died Tuesday.
He had served as auditor of Portland, deputy collector of internal revenue and deputy collector of customs and was frequently honored with election to high office by the Odd Fellows lodge.
Born in Barnard, Vt., October 15, 1841, at the age of 18 he moved to Auburn, Placer County, Cal., where in 1861 he became postmaster and later deputy county clerk. For three years following 1869 he was storekeeper for the Bellingham Bay Coal company at Whatcom, Washington territory. In 1871 he moved to Portland, in 1873 being made deputy collector of internal revenue and serving through the Bowlby, Gibson, Denny and Cartwright incumbencies. In 1880 he served as deputy to R. N. Shurlef, customs collector. In 1889 he was elected grand secretary of the Odd Fellows here, serving until 1894. In 1893 he was elected auditor of Portland, which office he held until 1900. Since that time, he had been engaged in business pursuits, most of the time being manager of the Henry building.
He had been grand secretary, grand patriarch, and grand representative to the sovereign grand lodge from Oregon in the Odd Fellows.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lee J. Clark of Portland, and Mrs. Susan M. Whitehurst of San Francisco, and four grandsons, Millard and Albert Gambell of Milwaukie, Or., Nelson B. Clark of Seattle and Albert Whitehurst of San Francisco.
Burial will be in Lone Fir cemetery.
