Bernice Such Carlson
JULY 2, 1928 – DECEMBER 6, 2022

Bernice Carlson, 94, died in faith and went to be with her Lord on December 6, 2022 at TruCare Hospice in Longmont, CO.

She was born on July 2, 1928 in Grafton, ND as the eldest child to Barney and Erma Such. When Bernice was 13, her father died in an accident on their farm near Hallock, MN. Erma and the seven children (ages 2-13) worked together to keep the farm and the family intact. As kids we were impressed that she'd known how to milk a cow, light a kerosene lamp, and do many other farm chores.

After graduation from high school in Kennedy, MN, she attended business school and worked as a bookkeeper in North Dakota, Colorado, and California. She enjoyed this period of independence with friends, roommates and workmates and had an active social life. She was a very stylish dresser in those days especially, as well as throughout her life.

She was 31 when Ted Carlson proposed, and she followed him to Jordan where he was on assignment working as a civil engineer. They were married on August 7, 1960 in Bethlehem. They were up for an adventure, and they settled into married life with all the joys and challenges of a new culture together.

Their daughter Carol was born in Jordan, and their son Tim was born on home leave in Chicago. They headed back for another assignment in Pakistan and then Afghanistan with the two young ones. During that time, Bernice and the kids were evacuated from Pakistan to Teheran, Iran during a war with India, where they spent a few months before Ted could join them. Some of their adventures took a lot of bravery and fortitude!

When Ted was finished with his assignments, they moved back to Chicago and their daughter Sharon was born. In 1967 Ted and Bernice settled in Lake Bronson, MN (near where Bernice grew up) to develop a potato, grain and native grass seed farm and finish raising their 3 children. Bernice was instrumental in keeping books for Ted's business all through the years.

Bernice was a hard-working, gentle, and attentive mom who had an empathetic ear. Her amazing sense of humor brought such joy and laughter. She was a great hugger and made a point of saying "I love you" often. She is remembered by her children as having an eye for beauty. She loved picking wildflowers and arranging them, drawing and painting, gardening, knitting and quilting. She was an avid reader and lover of words, and always had a book in hand. Her home was a sanctuary of order and peace where we felt secure and loved. Being somewhat of a minimalist, she didn't require lots of new things. She took care of, fixed, and loved family possessions, many of them lasting our whole lifetimes.

In 2000, Ted and Bernice retired to the Longmont area. They sold apples from Ted's U-pick apple orchard, and enjoyed the spacious farm house he built for them, with a view of the Rockies. They often enjoyed visits from relatives, and Bernice especially loved doting on her 6 grandchildren.

Bernice took care of Ted tenderly during his last days on hospice at home, and he often called out for her using her special nickname, Niecie. After his death Bernice lived independently in their home. She was able to drive to church, the store, and appointments and relished her ability to be self-sufficient.

She was active in the church her whole life, enjoying her Prime Timers class at Calvary Church until her last Sunday. Her faith was an essential pillar of her life.

A sudden bout of pneumonia the day before Thanksgiving left her unresponsive on Thanksgiving morning. Her family was by her side during her 13 days in the ICU and hospice until she took her last gentle breaths.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Carlson, son, Tim (Miriam) Carlson, daughter, Sharon (Tim) Cox, sister, Elsie Egstad and brothers, Melvin Such and Don (Alice) Such and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister, Helen, and twin brothers, Robert & Raymond.
