His nose was renowned. His diligence noted. His tenure with Gwinnett police lengthy.

"Beny" was the creme de la creme of K-9 sleuths.

But the 13-year veteran of the Gwinnett County Police Department's K-9 unit died Monday after suffering a stroke, an official said.

Beny's funeral is planned February 14 at Oak Rest Pet Gardens in Dacula. He'll be laid to rest in the Garden of Honor, a respite shared by at least 34 previous K-9 officers before him.

As a crook-catcher, Beny was busy.

The German Shepherd is credited with the apprehension and arrest of 160 suspects, including alleged murderers. He was also adept at tracking armed robbers, carjackers and home-invasion suspects, police said.

"Beny was known for his uncanny ability to track down criminals," said Donna Bethune, spokeswoman for the pet funeral home. "Some of his tracks lasted several miles and are well-known throughout the K-9 force."

The distinguished patrol dog was assigned to Gwinnett police Officer John Surowiec, said Bethune.
