Ryanne, 19, was born in Evanston, IL.

She was from Carpentersville, IL and was a sophomore studying psychology. She recently posted on her MySpace Web page: "Happy Valentine's Day Everybody! ... Saying you love someone is not enough, it's how you treat them that shows your true feelings." She was a 2006 graduate of Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville and a recipient of a scholarship from the high school's French Club, an accomplished member of the orchestra. She was a psychology major.

Her mother, Mary Kay Mace, told The Associated Press she and her husband named their only child Ryanne, and pronounced it like the boy's name Ryan, because "we thought we were having a boy."

"She was beautiful and brilliant and caring," Mace said of her daughter. "She wanted to start a career helping people. She was in psychology to become a counselor. She was our only child, the light of our lives."

Hundreds of mourners gathered at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles this afternoon to remember Ryanne Mace.

"Ryanne, we love you and we miss you," the 19-year-old Carpentersville woman's family wrote in her memorial service program.

The Northern Illinois University sophomore was one of five students killed in Thursday's campus shooting. The gunman took his own life.

Visitation took place today 2/18, at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles. A service is scheduled to follow at 2 p.m.

Dozens of flower arrangements lined a table in front of a projection screen depicting a slideshow of photographs of Mace through the years. Family snapshots of her posing in a tutu as a little girl, opening presents on Christmas morning, and smiling on prom night, reminders of a life cut far too short. Loved ones passed around scrapbooks and signed photographs of Mace.

Friends and relatives offered condolences, embracing one another and wondering out loud why this tragedy occurred. An only child, Mace studied psychology at NIU after graduating from Dundee-Crown High School in 2006.

"The Mace family wishes to thank all of you for your thoughts, prayers, concerns and caring as we try to make sense of this loss," the family stated in the memorial service program. "Ryanne was loved as much for her faults as for her strengths. Our lives will never be the same without her."
