Gayle, 20, of Carol Stream, was a sophomore at NIU. "She was a good person with a big heart," said a friend, Kelly Cavanaugh, who met her at the DeKalb Church of Christ.

Gayle sang in the choir and particiapted in theater at her alma mater Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream, IL. She graduated from the high school in 2006 and was a sophomore at NIU.

She was a devout member of the Chicago Church of Christ and a strong student who participated in choir and theater at Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream.

"The students and teachers are very saddened by her death,'' said school principal John Mensik. "Teachers that knew Gayle were shocked and devastated.''

She was one of five Northern Illinois University students killed by a gunman Thursday.

On Friday, the Chicago Church of Christ's Web site featured a tribute to Dubowksi, who worked as a camp counselor and volunteer in rural Kentucky on an Appalachian service project.

She was active in the church's DeKalb branch, and her parents, Joe and Laurel, and brother, Ryan, worshipped at the church's Greater Westland ministry, serving the western suburbs.

Meegan Zillman, who runs the DeKalb Church of Christ with her husband, Chris, said Friday night that Dubowski was "a great girl" but declined to say more out of respect for the family's wishes.

A friend of the family who answered the door Friday at Dubowski's home on a snowy cul-de-sac declined to comment.

According to a Facebook page dedicated to Dubowski, she was remembered for her beautiful singing voice, which landed her a part as a nun in her middle school's production of "The Sound of Music."

Again and again, Facebook tributes spoke of her deep faith.

Church of Christ members in Seattle and Los Angeles wrote that they were dedicating Friday's services to Dubowski's memory.

"I know she's in Heaven -- worshipping God and having so much fun with all those awesome people who did so much for God's Glory," wrote Mike James Brown, who listed himself as a member of NIU's class of 2009. "I definitely look forward to seeing her when I get there."
