Col. Israel Putnam Jr. was born in Salem, Mass. in 1739. He was the eldest son of the distinguished General Israel Putnam Sr. of Revolutionary War fame. He married Sarah Waldo, of an ancient and honorable Connecticut family.

Col. Putnam Jr. was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, having served first as the captain of the company in which he had enlisted, and afterward as an aide to his father, General Israel Putnam Sr.

He was one of the Ohio Company of Associates and came to Marietta, Ohio in 1788, and in 1789 was one of the company who began the settlement at Belpre, Ohio.

He was father to Eight Children. 5 boys- Israel, George, Dr. William Pitt Putnam, Aaron, and David. 3 Girls - Sarah, Mary, & Elizabeth.

He was an intelligent and enterprising agriculturist, and introduced choice fruits and an improved stock of cattle into this country.

He is cousin to General Rufus Putnam who, along with the other founders of the Ohio Company of Associates, settled Marietta, Ohio.
