Mary McFarlane was born in a cave (probably St. Michael's) to a British officer, Francis McFarlane, during the siege of Gilbralter. She grew up in Scotland where she married Alexander Duncan in 1798 in Glasgow. The family immigrated to the United States in 1809 after living a few years near Toronto, Canada. They lived at 124 Leroy St., New York City.

Mary had six children with five living to adulthood. Daughter Louisa married George Payn Quackenbos and lived in NYC. Jane never married and lived with her parents. Sons William & John settled in the Southern States. John lived in Jackson, MS, was a personal friend of Jefferson Davis, and supported the Confederacy during the Civil War. William became active as an educator of young women and a publisher of religious tracts in Mississippi and New Orleans. He was a Unionist during the war. Daughter Mary married Charles Stewart II and lived in MS, LA & NY.

Mary's son William was visiting from New Orleans in April 1863 when he died unexpectedly. Mary followed him a month later. She was in poor health and blind at the time of her death. Mary is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery with husband Alexander; children, William, Jane, Louisa; and members of the Quackenbos family.
