He played at the tight end and defensive end positions for three seasons (1960 to 1962) in the American Football League with the New York Titans. He enjoyed his most successful season in 1961, when he had 15 receptions for 208 yards and 4 touchdowns. In addition to football during his collegiate years at the University of Maine, Cooper excelled at track and basketball. He was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. In 41 career AFL games, Cooper had 36 recptions for 491 yards with 8 touchdowns.
