THE BAYNE MEMORIAL. — On Friday afternoon an interesting ceremony took place at the Mile-end Cemetery, in the presence of a large number of people, the occasion being the unveiling of a memorial column to the memory of the late Mr. George Bayne, who was buried in the above cemetery just a year ago. Mr. Bayne, at the time of his decease, was a member of the School Board, and was well known throughout the town for the philanthropic energy he had for years displayed in the education of the young. After his decease it was thought by many friends that some fitting memorial should be erected in his honour, and, at first, a school was suggested, but it being found impracticable to carry out this idea it was decided to erect a monument. Messrs. W. R. and C. Light, of Landport, were entrusted with this work, and the result has been a very handsome square column, about eight feet high, constructed of Aberdeen granite. It is placed on the lawn in front of the cemetery, and on the side facing the Commercial-road is the following inscription: —

"This memorial is erected by public subscription in memory of George Bayne, by whose exertion for more than a quarter of a century, a sound, religious, and secular education was imparted to thousands of children of the poorer classes of this borough. He was born 19th July, 1819. Died 19th January, 1876; and is interred in this cemetery. WILLIAM PINK, Esq., Mayor."

The Mayor, who conducted the proceedings, made a few appropriate remarks, saying he felt sure that everyone who had received assistance in education — both moral and spiritual — from Mr. Bayne would be delighted to see that memorial; and he hoped that many generations to come might emulate his conduct, and assist in the education — morally, intellectually, and spiritually — of those around them. After calling on the builders to unveil the column and thanking the subscribers for their efforts in the matter, the proceeding terminated. | The Hampshire Advertiser, January 31, 1877.

— Many thanks to Steve Ellis (49593307) for sharing the birth and death locations, correcting the cemetery, and providing the plot location.

Note: When Mile End Cemetery ceased operation in the 1950s, some interments were removed to other cemeteries in the area. See https://www.memorialsinportsmouth.co.uk/cemeteries/bayne.htm for additional information about the George Bayne monument.
