Various reports have him born either in Paradise Township or in Franklin County. For certain, he was the husband of Sarah Stambaugh Berkheimer, whom he married in 1866. In 1860, he was a carpenter presumably living in York Borough, but in 1870, resided in Paradise Township and still later in Big Mount, York County. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and black eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York with the regular army on August 9, 1862, but was discharged by surgeon's certificate just 19 days later in Philadelphia. He then was drafted in York October 24, 1862 and assigned to Co. D, 166th Pa. Infantry, serving at the rank of Corporal until honorably discharged with his company on July 28, 1863. Last, he enlisted in York January 21, 1864 with Co. A, 87th Pa. Infantry at the arnk of Private. Promoted to Corporal, date unknown, and to Sergeant on May 29, 1865. Shot in the shoulder May 31, 1864 during the march to Cold Harbor and hospitalized in Washington D. C. Returned to duty only to be wounded in the neck August 21, 1864 near Charlestown, West Virginia and hospitalized once more. Honorably discharged with his company on June 29, 1865. Bates' History of Pennsylvania Volunteers wrongly lists his 87th Pa. enlistment date as September 11, 1861.
