3908 Lance Corporal A Holland, 14th (The King's) Hussars. The Regiment deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, with A and C squadrons sailing on the Victorian, arrived at the Cape on 1 Jan 1900, and were sent on to Durban. B squadron sailed on the Cestrian, and landed in Cape Colony on 10 Jan 1900. The two Natal squadrons were for a time brigaded with the 1st Royal Dragoons and 13th Hussars. They took part in the battle of Tugela Heights 14-27 Feb 1900 leading to the relief of Ladysmith. Afterwards they were brought round to the Cape and joined B squadron and in Apr 1900 the regiment was put into Dickson's 4th Cavalry Brigade, with the 7th Dragoon Guards and 8th Hussars for the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria. They took part in the movement to the south-east of Bloemfontein, commencing about 21 Apr 1900, with the object of clearing the way to Wepener, then besieged and then had action at Thabanchu and on 1 May 1900 had fighting at Hout Nek. In the second phase of the war the 14th Hussars were chiefly employed in the Eastern Transvaal and about the passes in the Newcastle district, where they frequently had skirmishes. Lance Corporal Holland was killed in action at Abertinia (or died accidentally), near Harrismith on 16 May 1901. He was buried at Abertinia. His remains were reinterred at Harrismith on 20 May 1905.
