Son of William DeMaster (1846-1920) and Cathlene Catherine Van Dien-DeMaster (1848-1942). Cemetery records indicate his surname as DeMeester. This is the Danish spelling of the family surname prior to immigration. It was changed to DeMaster upon immigration from the Netherlands to the United States of America. John's grandparents came to the U.S. when John's father was still young.
