Reverend Eric Meyer, C.P., 84, died peacefully at Sacred Heart Passionist Retreat Center on January 13, 2023. A proud native of Chicago and wanting to become a priest since 5th grade at St. Ita's parish in Chicago, in 1952 he entered the Passionist minor seminary in Normandy, later moving to Warrenton, Missouri. He professed his first vows as a Passionist on July 9, 1959, and was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on April 28, 1966. Fr. Eric earned his doctorate under the direction of Johann Baptist Metz in Munster, Germany. He taught theology at Catholic Theological Union, Chicago and Case Western Reserve, Cleveland. He served as a campus minister at the Newman Center at Southern Illinois University- Carbondale. Fr. Eric was an associate pastor and then the last Passionist pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Chicago from 2005-2013.
Fr. Eric was the third of four children born to the late Clarence and Anna (nee Stockinger) Meyer. He was the brother of James (Maureen) Meyer, the late Mary (Jack) Magruder and the late Joseph Meyer. He was the proud uncle of Mark (Caroline) Magruder, John (Stephanie) Magruder, David (Dr. Susan Hibbs) Magruder, Leann (Don) Frankel, Brian (Colleen) Magruder, and Laura Magruder; Dr. Robert (Paige) Meyer, Timothy (Mendy) Meyer and Mary (Allie Seay) Meyer. Great uncle of Jennifer Magruder; Katie (Captain David, US Army) Hess, Timothy Magruder; Jane (Andy) DeCheck; Madeleine, Andrew, Alex and Crystal Hibbs-Magruder; Tressa and Jack Frankel; Michael and Megan Magruder; Davis, Griffin and Cate Meyer; Sara Beth and Sophie Jane Meyer; and many beloved others.
The funeral will take place Saturday, January 21, 2023, with family and friends gathering at Immaculate Conception Church, 7211 W. Talcott Ave. (at Harlem Ave.) from 9:30 am until Mass that will celebrated at 11:00am.
Private interment at a later date at All Saints Cemetery, DesPlaines, Illinois.
