Maxine Rae Maxine Rae (Pinckney) Cumings ran into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on January 3, 2023, at the end of a long life focused on her faith and her family. Born on June 29, 1927, to Arzie and Bessie Pinckney in Sparta, Michigan, Maxine grew up and attended school in Sparta. She married her beloved husband, D. Allen Cumings, Sr. on June 16, 1944, and together had a family. Even while raising their children, Maxine taught music at Morning Star School and was active serving in Pioneer Girls, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School at Sparta Baptist Church. In 1980, after Allen retired from the family business (East Sparta Equipment, Inc.), they moved to Portland, Oregon, where Allen served in development, fundraising, and administrative roles in various Christian organizations. Maxine continued her service work by volunteering with the ministries Allen served. She also chaired the social committee for the influential Ambassador Class of Montavilla Baptist Church, planning multiple outings and events for up to 100 class members to enjoy throughout the year. Maxine was known to be a wonderful cook, a generous crafter, and a gracious hostess. Her homemade dinner rolls, chocolate cake, iced tea, and "Gramma-Great's World Famous Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread" have been enjoyed by hundreds even thousands over the years. An avid knitter, Maxine spent much of her spare time creating sweaters, vests, dresses and (her specialty) infant layettes, which she gifted to family, friends, and charitable organizations. Her home was always open to visiting family and friends, both in Sparta and in Portland. Perhaps her greatest earthly joy was caring for and being with her family. Up until her final weeks on earth, she prayed for each member of her family by name every day using her "The Greats" photo board to track the progress of her great-grandchildren. She also lovingly sent birthday cards to each family member and included a Scripture verse selected especially for the recipient. She was a beloved example of how to live a truly gracious and committed Christian life. Maxine was preceded in death by Allen, her husband of nearly 68 years, in 2012. She is survived by her five children: Dave (Carolyn) Cumings, Jon (Becky) Cumings, bc (Kristy) Cumings, Diane (Jeff) Boone, and Tori Cumings; 15 grandchildren: Kristen (Todd) Chatman, Julie (Scott) Pierce, Alisa (Steve) Dertein, Troy (Becky) Cumings, Audra Harvey, Holly (Niall) Graf, Brandon Cumings, MacKenzie (Vanessa) Cumings, Brian (Joy) Cumings, Gallagher (Melissa) Cumings, Keelia (Mike) Stralow, Joshua (Renee) Boone, Catherine Boone, Christina (Michael) Vaughn, and Miri Cumings; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters- in-law: Ruth Cumings and Joyce Pinckney; multiple nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland, Oregon. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Sparta Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 11:00am.
