4580 Private G Paterson, 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards. The regiment arrived in Natal from India before the war broke out. They fought in the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 and at Lombard's Kop on 30 Oct 1900 (Lieutenant Norwood awarded the VC). They were in Ladysmith throughout the siege and when the advance north started again were brigaded with the 1st Royal Dragoons and 13th Hussars under Brigadier General Burn-Murdoch. Private Paterson died of enteric fever (typhoid) at 15 General Hospital, Howick, Natal on 10 Feb 1901 aged 22 years. He was buried in the military cemetery, Howick and is commemorated on the Howick British Military memorial (see https://graves-at-eggsa.org/main.php?g2_itemId=698751).
