8467 Private J Kidd, 1st Battalion the King's Own Scottish Borderers. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Braemar Castle and Goorkha at the beginning of Jan 1900, and arrived at the Cape about the 26 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd Norfolk, 2nd Lincoln, and 2nd Hampshire, they formed the 14th Brigade under Brigadier General Chermside. They joined the Kimberley relief force on the Orange River and took part in the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria, fighting at the battle of Paardeberg 18-27 Feb 1900 and Karee Siding on 29 Mar 1900 (15 killed and 45 wounded). In July 1900 they operated north of Pretoria, and became the extreme left of the army for the eastern advance and they occupied Balmoral on 25 Jul 1900 before undertakling garrison tasks at some stations and posts on the railway. In 1901 they operated in a column in the Megaliesberg district before moving onto the Mooi River blockhouse line in Sep 1901. Private Kidd was wounded in action and died of his wounds at Frederikstad, near Potchefstroom on 6 Oct 1901. He was buried at Frederikstad. His remains were later reinterred at Potchefstroom. He is commemorated on the Boer War Wall of Remembrance in Alexander Park (Olien Park) Cemetery, Potchefstroom (see: https://www.graves-at-eggsa.org/main.php?g2_itemId=266753).
