John was in ill health when mustered out of the war and headed for England for several years but remained in hospitals there so returned back home only to go to California about 1884 which seemed to help his health. Had previously lived in San Francisco before moving to San Diego 9-months before he died of apoplexy.
Never married - most likely gay as his business partner Lewis Ginter was known to be gay.
