Son of John Frazier Alvey, Sr. and Sarah (Wills) Alvey who shares same stone. His name is at the base of mother Sarah's side.

Enlisted in the "Governor's Guard" under the command of Captain (Doctor) J. Grattan Cabell and served in that company until his appointment as quartermaster in the Confederate army with the rank of major.

Was partner with tobacco mogul Lewis Ginter and ran Ginter & Alvey which was located at 13th and Main prior to the Civil War and dealt with cotton and fabrics. John was in ill health when mustered out of the war and headed for England for several years but remained in hospitals there so returned back home only to go to California about 1884 which seemed to help his health. Had previously lived in San Francisco before moving to San Diego 9-months before he died of apoplexy.

Never married - most likely gay as his business partner Lewis Ginter was known to be gay.
