Ada (Sweeney) Bowman was the wife of George Winfield Bowman. She was a daughter of Martha (Dunlap) and Edward Sweeney per the Iowa State Census. Per her death certificate, she was born in Illinois on September 10, 1867. Per that document and an article published in the Daily Nonpareil on February 14, 1933, Ada died the prior evening after sustaining severe burns to her face, chest, and arms. She had attempted to salvage freshly laundered clothing that had caught fire from a nearby hot stove. That fire subsequently spread to her own garments. Her husband George attempted to rescue her, beating the flames back and tearing his wife's burning clothes away from her body with his bare hands; he also sustained burn injuries to his hands and arms. Unfortunately, Ada's burns were quite severe, and she succumbed to her injuries at Jennie Edmundson Hospital approximately five hours after the fiery incident occurred.
