Dec. 19, 2016, at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, California
Born in 1937 in Bismarck, N.D., to Belinda and Col. Herman A. Brocopp, Bette was the third child of five. Her siblings, Bennett and Herman Brocopp, Joan Zimmer and Gail DuLac, preceded her in death.
Bette received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of North Dakota in 1959. She worked as a registered nurse, specializing in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota, and she also "endured" a short stint at University Medical Center in Las Vegas. She spent 33 years working at San Francisco General Hospital, where she retired as head of Utilization Review. Her relentless hard work was recognized by the city and county of San Francisco when the honorable Mayor Willie Brown proclaimed Sept. 23, 1999, to be Bette Shafae Day.
Bette loved good food and socializing; she enjoyed watching the San Francisco Giants, the 49ers and the Golden State Warriors with friends and family. Bette was a generous, kind and loving woman, and a wife, mother and grandmother. She cherished the time she spent with her grandson, Cyrus.
Bette loved attending Coastside Lutheran Church, where her love of Jesus brought out a big, bright smile that could light up a room.
She is survived by her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephew, daughter-in-law Jenny Shafae and grandson Cyrus Shafae. Bette will always be wife and best friend to her loving husband, Charles Shafae, and mother to her two children, Darren and Dustin Shafae.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. at Coastside Lutheran Church on
Christmas Eve, December 24, 2016.
