Barbara (Marshall) Baumer passed away peacefully Monday, December 26, 2022, at the age of 79.

Barb was born August 21, 1943, in New York, New York, to Robert D. and Mary Louise Marshall. She graduated from Lakeland High School and earned a nursing degree from St. Vincent's Nursing School in Jacksonville, Florida. She married Frederick H. Baumer, Jr., on November 21, 1966, in Lakeland, Florida. Barb and Fred moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1967, and that became their home for the next 55 years.

Barb worked in the home for a number of years, focusing tirelessly with Fred on raising their three sons, all while volunteering in a variety of settings around the South Bend community, including at Christ the King School and Parish, the University of Notre Dame, Healthwin Hospital and the Brothers of Holy Cross Community. She eventually re-started her nursing career as her children grew older, working at Regency Place Nursing Home, Dujarie House and eventually as a hospice nurse at Hospice for St. Joseph County for over 15 years. As a nurse, Barb comforted many in the community as they faced their final days of this life, and she benefitted from that same generous service as her battle with Alzheimer's disease progressed.

Barb was fearless, adventuresome and loving throughout her life. Together with her siblings in Florida, Barb water-skied from a young age in ski shows at Cypress Gardens. She took her sons on a 7-week camping excursion (without Fred) to our country's National Parks across the west; she fished for walleye, muskie and bass, cross-country skied and snowmobiled with Fred, her sons and friends; she co-coached baseball teams for her sons with another school mother when volunteers were lacking; she traveled to Europe with friends to show devotion to Blessed Mother Mary; she regularly hosted and life-guarded the neighborhood children at the Baumer family pool; she regularly served as a ready-to-help nurse for neighbors and friends; she served as a second mother to a multitude of her sons' St. Joseph and Notre Dame classmates, not just as a hostess of tailgates and parties on football weekends, but during the more mundane South Bend times with home-cooked meals, nursing and reflexology skills and laundry services. She liked a tidy house and was known to be found raking leaves and cleaning garages and gutters at her sons' homes if she saw the chance. She was a voracious reader and loved to garden, and she was an avid card-shark, spending time laughing and enjoying her family and friends over "friendly" card games and a glass of wine.

Barb is survived by her husband, Fred; sons, John (Mollie) Baumer of Manhattan Beach, California, Steve (Maureen) Baumer of St. Louis, Missouri and Brian of South Bend; grandchildren, Maxwell, Delaney and Jack Henry and Nick, Andrew, Luke and Genevieve; siblings David (Ann) Marshall of Lakeland, Florida and Mary Kay May of Tallahassee, Florida, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert, and her mother, Mary Louise, and her siblings Robert D. Marshall, Jr. and Howard Barrett Marshall.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 5, 2023, in Christ the King Catholic Parish, 52473 SR 933, South Bend, IN. Graveside services and burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN. Friends may visit with the family for one hour prior to mass in the church on Thursday.

Contributions in memory of Barbara may be made to Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, 922 E. Colfax Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617. Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be left for the Baumer family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
