Information on this page relates to four people, three of whom were buried in the same grave: Deborah Pullen [? previously Deborah Barnes] (?–1782); either William Barnes (?–1778), or possibly William Butter (?–1778); and Sarah King (c.1739–1818).

When photographed on 10 ‎December ‎2021 only the footstone of this grave was extant. The incised inscription was clear and legible. Based on similar gravestones in the churchyard, the footstone inscription consistently bears the initial letters of the deceased's names and their years of death, and are usually listed in the same order on the longer headstone inscription.

The identities of the deceased in this grave have been found by cross-referencing the initials and years of death on the footstone with entries in the parish registers. The proximity of this footstone to two grave markers immediately adjacent to the south of this plot (Find a Grave memorials #239506029 and #249267158) may suggest that they were part of an extended family group.

"D.P." was likely to be Deborah Pullen, who was buried 25 April 1782.[1] She may have been the wife of Thomas Pullen, who was subsequently buried in a plot immediately to the south of hers (Find a Grave memorial #249267158). A plausible marriage record between a Deborah Barnes and a Thomas Pullen was recorded in the Sutton parish register on 5 December 1738.[2] There was no indication in the marriage record to confirm whether Barnes was Deborah's maiden or married surname, so it is possible (although not proven) that she was a widow when she and Thomas married.

The identity of "W.B 1778" cannot be conclusively identified. Circumstantial evidence suggests that he was the William Barnes who was buried on 13 March 1778.[3] His age was not stated in the burial record, but it is possible (although not proven) that he was the William Barnes, son of Moses and Mary Barnes, who was baptised at Sutton on 19 May 1776,[4] as their gravestone (Find a Grave memorial #249267158) is immediately to the south of Thomas Pullen's. If this identification is correct, then William appears to have been Deborah Pullen's grandson from an apparent first marriage.

One other burial record in the parish register provides a possible alternative candidate for "W.B 1778", that of William Butter, who was buried on 31 May 1778.[5]

"S.K 1818" appears to have been 79-year-old Sarah King, who was buried 19 April 1818.[6] Her identity has not been confirmed, but note the following circumstantial evidence:

(i) A Sarah Pullen, the daughter of a Thomas and Deborah Pullen, was baptised at the adjacent parish of Cheam, Surrey, on 14 March 1739;[7]

(ii) Her baptism was the year after Thomas Pullen and Deborah Barnes married in Sutton; and

(iii) Sarah Pullen would also have been around 79 years old when Sarah King died in 1818.

However, no documentary evidence has been found to demonstrate conclusively that Sarah Pullen (c.1739–?) and Sarah King (c.1739–1818) were the same person.
