Martha Irey was born in 1798 in what is now Barbour County, West Virginia. Her parents were Philip and Hannah (Brown) Irey. The Ireys had come from Loudoun County, Virginia, then to Barbour County, West Virginia, and then to Columbiana County, Ohio in 1803. Philip was a blacksmith, but acquired a farm in Ohio, between New Garden and Winona. In 1817, Martha married George Buck, in a ceremony officiated by Clement Vallandingham, a Presbyterian minister and father of the famous Clement Vallandigham.

George and Martha ran a tavern out of their house for several years, which was known as Buck's Tavern, which was said to be the center of all social and political gatherings for several years. The first political convention in the township (Bucks Township) was held at their tavern.
