26307 Private M Frost, Roberts' Horse. Volunteered for service with Roberts' Horse during the Second Anglo Boer War. The regiment was attached to General French's Cavalry Division before it set out for the relief of Kimberley from the Modder River. On 19 Feb 1900 Roberts' Horse did good work in seizing Koedoesrand Drift and the hills south of it, and part of them were at the taking of Kitchener's Hill next day. About 2 Mar 1900 Roberts' Horse were put into the brigade of mounted infantry under Lieutenant Colonel Alderson, along with the first and second regiments of regular mounted infantry, the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, and Rimington's Guides. They were involved in seizing positions commanding Bloemfontein on the evening of 12 Mar 1900. After the occupation of Bloemfontein, Alderson's Mounted Infantry, including Roberts' Horse, accompanied Major General Broadwood on an expedition to Ladybrand leading to a sharp rear guard action in which Robert's Horse were instrumental in saving the artillery guns. They were soon in action again, taking part in the operations under Generals French and Rundle for clearing the south-east of the Orange River Colony and effecting the relief of Wepener. Roberts' Horse were with Ridley and Ian Hamilton in the next advance from Bloemfontein to Pretoria and were at the Battle of Diamond Hill on 11-12 June 1900. They took part in the initial operations for the surrounding of Prinsloo, and again had sharp fighting near Heidelberg on the north side of the Vaal on 23 Jun 1900 and between 16-20 July 1900 Roberts' Horse were frequently engaged with the Boer rear-guard. In Dec 1900 and Jan 1901 they were part of a large force under Brigadier General Cunningham to clear the country west of Krugersdorp and were engaged at Olifant's Nek on 22 Jan 1901 and at Middelfontein on 23 Jan 1901. Private Frost died of enteric fever at the temporary military hospital, Ventersdorp on 6 Jul 1901.
