James enlisted at Louisville, Kentucky as a Private in Company "G", 107th Infantry, United States Colored Troops on 4 October 1864. He died at Point of Rocks Hospital in February 1865, and was buried in the cemetery there, per interment records of that cemetery. Remains from Point of Rocks were disinterred and moved to City Point in 1866; it is presumed James rests there today as an "Unknown".

His name can be found on plaque no. C-104 of the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
