Social Reformer. She was an escaped slave who became a political leader and a freedom fighter. (The English translation of her name is Dandara of Palmares). She participated in the governance of "Quilombo dos Palmares" which was the largest community of escaped slaves in Brazil; estimated to have 20,000 inhabitants. Dandara fought bravely against Colonial Portuguese attacks and was either killed or committed suicide (to avoid return to slavery) on February 6, 1694. She had three sons with her husband "Zumbi dos Palmares."

While few other details are known of her life, her legacy lives on as a national hero of modern Brazil. In April 2019 her name was entered into the Brazilian Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Fatherland. She is also the inspiration for a video game by Long Hat House and is portrayed as a Great General in the downloadable Babylon Pack game Civilization VI.
