Artist. She was a Swedish-born master printmaker in the art world. Birgit Skiöld was a forerunner in advocating the status of printmaking as an art. She experimented with various techniques, including but not limited to, mixed media, embossing, collage and Xerox printing. She opened a print making workshop in Marylebone but soon the need to expand led her to open the "Print Workshop" in the basement of a house on Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia. Many avant-garde artists who have gone on to become internationally recognized artists, including David Hockney and Eduardo Paolozzi, worked with her London studio. She was a well-known member of the London art scene and a founding member of the Printmakers' Council. She is commemorated in an eponymous award for innovating printmaking. Her papers are archived at the Victoria and Albert Museum and pieces of her art are housed at The Tate Museum.
