4303 Private A Dale, 2nd Battalion the Lancashire Fusiliers. The Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Norman on 2 Dec 1900, arriving at the Cape about 19 Dec 1900 and was sent round to Durban. Along with the 2nd King's Royal Lancaster Regiment, 1st South Lancashire Regiment, and the 1st York and Lancaster Regiment, they formed the 11th Brigade under Major General Woodgate, part of the Ladysmith relief force. They fought in the actions about Venter's Spruit on the 19-21 Jan 1900 and on 23 Jan 1900 they attacked Spion Kop (43 killed, over 100 wounded). Private Dale was one of those killed at Venter's Spruit on the Upper Tugela, just south east of Acton Homes. He was buried on the battlefield. He is commemorated on the Spion Kop memorial (see: https://www.graves-at-eggsa.org/main.php?g2_itemId=2266216). He is also commemorated on the Lancashire Fusiliers Boer War memorial in Whitehead Gardens, Knowsley Street, Bury, Greater Manchester, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/153138/).

Not buried on Spion Kop. Possibly one of the 75 unnamed soldiers commemorated on the memorial in Rangeworthy Military Cemetery, close to Venter's Spruit (see: https://www.graves-at-eggsa.org/main.php?g2_itemId=735260).
