Robert Heifetz, a former urban studies professor at San Francisco State University, died April 7 2001 after a long battle with cancer. He was 68.
Professor Heifetz was born in Los Angeles to Jascha Heifetz and Florence Ida Vidor-Heifetz. He received a doctorate from Columbia University in planning.

He was a regular participant in anti-military demonstrations with the Bay Area Peace Navy, a group whose rallies are described as "guerrilla theater" on water. The group worked with local artists promoting peace and protesting the militarization of the San Francisco Bay. Professor Heifetz's political activism and boating skills were especially appreciated, according to those who knew him.

In recent days, Professor Heifetz, a Telegraph Hill resident since 1979, protested the use of boat sails for advertising on San Francisco Bay.

Before joining the faculty at San Francisco State, he taught at the Hampton Institute, the University of Illinois in Urbana and the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Professor Heifetz is survived by his wife, Albina Starkova; a daughter, Natasha Heifetz Campbell of Santa Barbara; a son, Daniel Heifetz of San Francisco; two sisters, Josefa Heifetz of Mill Valley and Suzanne Parry of Santa Monica; a brother, Jay Heifetz of Los Angeles; and a grandson.
