Michael Bakalo enlisted in the New York National Guard on November 18, 1936 and later, he transferred to the Army Air Corps. He was an 8th Air Force pilot on B-24H named "Flying Ginny". He was awarded an Air Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart.

1Lt. Bakalo was brought home aboard the S.S. Joseph V Connolly in October 1947. He was laid to rest with full military honors on 8 November 1947. His parents were laid to rest next to him. Had a sister Helen and half-siblings Max and Maria.Michael served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24H "Flying Ginny" #41-28944, 67th Bomber Squadron, 44th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in New York prior to the war.

B-24H #41-28944 was the Mission Leading B-24 of a group on a bombing mission over Germany. LTC John Iglehart "Jack" Turnbull (see below) was the Commander of the mission for the group. They left from Shipdham, England on a bombing mission over Leverkusen, Germany.

While returning from a successful bombing mission they were hit by German flak which caused them to crash near Petegan, Belgium during the war.

Michael was "Killed In Action" in this crash.
He was awarded the Air Medal & the Purple Heart.
