Thelma Benson was the tenth of ten children of Newton Wesley “Pogue” Benson and Mary Ann “Mollie” Morgan. She was born September 1, 1903 in Langston, Jackson County, AL and died March 1, 1977.

She married Eddie Scott Michaels, the son of John Horace Michaels from McMinn County, TN and Lydia Jane Atchley. This Michaels family lived in Langston and included children Mary, James F, John, Samuel L., Columbus, William, Eddie, and Roberta.

The Michaels are found in the 1900 and 1910 census for Langston, Jackson County, AL. There is another Michaels family two houses away, so this is apparently the big, extended Michaels family that we are familiar with from church.

When Eddie registered for the draft in 1917, he was a slender 22-year old of medium build with blue eyes and light hair living in Langston. He reported having a physical disability that would hinder his ability to serve. However, his headstone says that he served in the Navy Reserve during WWI.

In the 1920 census, Eddie is listed as Edward (though he went by Ed), a 24-year-old living and farming on a rented far with his brother Sam (who is 10 years older) in Langston. In the 1930 census, Sam is still unmarried and living with brother James and his extended family. Sam died in 1960 and is buried beside James and his family in Langston Cemetery.
