Southworth Mather was born in New Jersey, and when young moved with his father, Daniel Mather, to Virginia. Thence they came to Ohio. Southworth was married in Union Township, Union County, to Philena Rice, of Vermont.

About 1831, he removed with his wife and two children to Jackson Township, squatting on a piece of land about a mile west of Essex. He afterward purchased land in Washington Township and lived there for a time. He was a local Methodist preacher. Like others, he was a squatter at first, but afterward purchased land. He then removed with his family to Logan County and ultimately to Allamakee, Iowa. Mr. Mather was one of those restless border spirits, fond of hunting, and only content when dwelling on the extreme frontier. (Union County, Ohio - 1883 History - Chapter VI - Dover Township).

Four of Southworth's sons were in the Civil War, Darius C., Squire, John H., and Captain John Sterling Mather. Other children were George, Daniel, Harriet Baldwin, Fannie Bishop, Catharine Satterlee, Fortner, Andrew, and William.
