THE WILLAMETTE CLAIMS ANOTHER VICTIM – BODY RECOVERED.
C. Petrarchi, a Portuguese fish packer in the employ of the Deep Sea Fishing Company, was drowned in the river, a short distance above the foot of Alder street, at 5 o'clock las evening.
Petrarchi and another man in the employ of the company had gone to the cold storage warehouse with a row boat after some fish. They had already passed the office the Deep Sea Fishing company at the foot of Alder street, and were about to land on a scow lying alongside the Lucas Mason, when the sad accident occurred. Petrarchi up on the bow of the boar, and was in the act of stepping off when he slipped and fall overboard. Not being able to swim he sank at once and his companion who stood rady to render assistance saw nothing more of the body. Harvey did not see just how Petrarchi went overboard for his face was turned, but he heard the splash and guessed how it happened. There was a rope tied to the barge and the presumption is that the unfortunate man lost his balance in trying to reach it.
Petrarchi leaves a wife, who lives at No. 3 Harrison street. She was overwhelmed with grief on receiving the sad intelligence of her husband's death, and at once repaired to the scene of the drowning to enlist the assistance of deckhands in an effort to recover the body. The river is rather deep at the point where the drowning occurred, and as the bottom is rough, too, all efforts to recover the body were unsuccessful.
Coroner River was notified soon after, and likewise Hugh Brady, the only man in the city who seems to understand the science of recovering bodies.
Although it was already dark and all his grappling apparatus was at Albina, Mr. Brady with his usually quick sympathy and self-sacrifice, lost no time in getting to work. He dragged the river several hours, but at last accounts had not found the body.
Petrarchi was 32 years of age. He had been in the employ of the Deep Sea Fishing Company about six months and always enjoyed the confidence and good will of his employers. He has relatives in California, and his wife's people live on French Prairie.
Coroner River will doubtless hold an inquest on the body when it is recovered from the river.
Later. – A 11 o'clock last night Hugh Brady, who had been searching several hours, hooked the body with his grappling irons and had it removed to the morgue.
