Susan W. Schaeffer
May 17, 1939 - March 13, 2023

Susan W. Schaeffer, 83, of Flying Hills, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023, with her beloved family by her side, in Tower Health's Reading Hospital.

Sue was born in Reading, to parents Theodore C. and Caroline G. (Rowe) Walker, and was survived by siblings Michael P. Walker (and wife Roselyn) of Shillington; and Kathleen R. Farrell (and husband Michael) of Shillington. She was preceded in death by her brother James A. Walker and sister Carol A. Freese.

Sue and her beloved husband and best friend, Jay B. Schaeffer, were married for 53 years. They both loved fine dining and food; this passion would serve as the impetus for them to become proprietors of Green Hills Inn for almost 40 years. With their partnership, Green Hills Inn received the prestigious Four-Star Mobile Travel Guide Award, and earned some of the highest Zagat ratings possible. Sue and Jay would travel to France and walk all over Europe for years, enjoying their love of fine food, travel and most of all, spending time together creating memories of a lifetime.

Family was the most important love of Sue's life, beyond her beloved Jay. Sue was survived by her son Daniel L. Cafoncelli (and wife Terri M.) ; son Joseph T. Cafoncelli (and wife Kathy L.); daughter Lori A. (and husband Eric C.) Kramer; and daughter Bernadette M. Cafoncelli, (fiancée of Joseph P. Church); cherished grandchildren; Jessica L. Lengel, Michael J. Cafoncelli, Stephanie L. Cafoncelli, Alex S. Frantz, Douglass J. Cafoncelli and Natalie M. Frantz; and great-grandchildren, Timothy, Patrick, Olivia, Carson, Domenic, Charlotte, Paige and Leona.

Sue's 43 years in recovery were built upon a foundation of hope, willingness and above all, love. When anyone, anywhere needed help, Sue's hand was always there to pass it on.

Sue was a voracious reader, completing multiple books every month. Her passions also included gardening, which she enjoyed during her years at Green Hills Inn and at home with Jay. Sue was a multitasker before they ever coined the term. She took pride in their home and meticulously decorated it for every holiday. Sue always prioritized her family and never forgot a birthday card. She was a phenomenal cook and that added to her gift of making their home filled with love. She also loved a large variety of music, history, art and all sports; especially the Philadelphia Eagles. The highlight of her summers was having as many of her family members together at Dewey Beach.

A visitation with Sue's family was held Saturday, March 25, 2023, from 9:30 AM- 11:30 AM at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, with a memorial service immediately following the visitation. Contributions in Sue's memory may be made to The Salvation Army.
