YOUNGSTOWN – Michael C. Bilon, 88, of South Osborn Avenue, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 25., 2010, at Briarfield at Ashley Circle following a brief illness.

Michael was born Sept. 4, 1921 in Pittsburg, a son of the late Wasyl and Mary Bereska Bilon, and came to Campbell with his family as a child before moving to Youngstown.

He was a 1939 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and we a four-year veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

Mike worked at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Campbell works for 27 years, retiring as a weigher in the accounting department in 1983. He also worked as a salesman in the furniture department at Strouss' Department for several years, and in his younger days, worked at Benada Aluminum.

Mr. Bilon was a member of the of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown and was former member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic in Youngstown. He was a councilman at both churches, and St. Anne's a bingo caller and festival worker. He was a member of the UNA No. 119, the Ukrainian Providence Association, and we a member of the League of Ukrainian Catholics, for which he served for time as national president.

A quiet yet active man, Mike was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage and was always willing to volunteer for projects that benefited the Ukrainian churches, organizations, and families throughout the area. He received recognition and numerous awards for his outstanding service to the Ukrainian community.
He and his wife, Esther hosted the Ukrainian Radio Hour on WKTL Radio in Struthers for 25 years, after the death of their son, Pat, who started the program. They also operate a Ukrainian artifact store out of their home for many years and developed original Ukrainian dancing figurines that were sold throughout the county.

Mike and his wife were responsible for organizing the annual "Night in Kiev" Celebration at Ukrainian Orthodox Center in Youngstown, which attracted guests from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

His beloved wife of 61 years, Esther Patrick Bilon, whom he married Jan. 20, 1945, passed away Feb. 4, 2006.

Funeral services will begin at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the funeral home and continue at 11 a.m., at St. Anne Church.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, where Mr. Bilon will be laid rest next to his wife.

Memorial contributions may be made in Michael's name to St. Ann Ukrainian Catholic Church or to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic church in care of the funeral home.
