ELROY P. BRABENDER, SR.

Elroy P. Brabender, Sr., age 84, of 110 S. Beebe Ave., Peshtigo, died Saturday evening, March 20, 1993 at Rennes Health Care Center. Mr. Brabender was born August 30, 1908, at Peshtigo.

He lived his entire life in the area. He was married April 6, 1929 in Peshtigo to Flora Feske, daughter of Gustav Feske and his wife, Margaret Engel. He was employed at Badger Paper Mills for over 40 years, retiring in 1974. He was a crane operator in the wood yard most of his years at Badger.

Elroy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the P.B.M. Retired Men's Club, and the P.B.M. 40 Year Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a dedicated member of the Peshtigo Fire Dept., having served for 51 years. He was an honorary life member of the Fire Dept., serving as fire chief for 27 years. He lectured the schools on fire safety education for a number of years. On Nov. 30, 1980 he received a citation from the Wisconsin State Assembly for lecturing on fire safety education through the local schools and also nursing homes, etc. He also served on the Peshtigo Police Dept. for several years, was named Citizen of the Year for 1978. He received plaques from both the Larson and Rennes Nursing homes for fire safety education.

Survivors include his wife, Flora, 1 son, Elroy, Jr., (Bev), of Laughlin, Nev., 5 daughters, Mrs. Barbara (Hilbert) Seefeldt, of Lena, Mrs. Connie (Stan) Ostrenga, of Wallace, Mich., Marlene Felner, of Appleton, Wis., Mrs. Susan (Royce) Squier, of Menominee, Mrs. Jackie (James) Bertschinger, of Hanover Park, Ill.; 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Hazel Behnke, of Coleman, Betty Brown, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Mrs. Ruth (Richard) Wilizius, of Peshtigo. He was preceded in death by 1 son, 3 brothers, 2 granddaughters, 1 grandson, and 1 great-grandson.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Harper Funeral Home. P.B.M. Retired Men's Club will meet at the funeral home at 7 p.m. to pay their respects, and they will also meet at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. The Peshtigo Firemen will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday to pay their respects at the funeral. Parish prayers will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rev. Paul Radelski will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Peshtigo.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, David and Mark Ostrenga, Scott and Don Squier, Wayne Seefeldt, and Andy Bertschinger.
