867 Private C Mayne, 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot. The battalion was sent to South Africa in 1879 for service in the Anglo-Zulu War and saw action at the Battle of Ulundi on 4 Jul 1879. It remained in South Africa and fought in the First Anglo Boer War at the Battle of Laing's Nek on 28 Jan 1881 (74 killed and 101 wounded) and the Battle of Majuba Hill on 27 Feb 1881. Private Mayne was wounded in action at the Battle of Laing's Nek and died of his wounds at Mount Prospect Camp, Natal over 3 weeks later.
