Firefighter Raymond Barrett of the Apshawa Fire Department,NJ collapsed of an apparent heart attack while fighting a blaze in a house fire. He was rescued from the house, and colleagues performed CPR. But their efforts proved fruitless.
"He was a gung-ho type of guy. He was always there no matter what," said Fire Commissioner Ed Steines.
Raymond was a 31-year veteran of the department and served as chief for the last three years. Raymond also served his country in the military. He had served in the Army and was stationed in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 in the 2nd Battalion 18th infantry, 1st infantry division, "The Big Red One." He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and other State and County Medals.
