Private P Hurley, 3rd Battalion the 60th Regiment (The King's Royal Rifle Corps). In January 1879 the Battalion was in Colchester when it received immediate orders to embark for the Colony of Natal where hostilities with the Zulus had resulted in the defeat at Isandwana. On arrival in Durban they deployed to the Tugela River, where under the command of Lord Chelmsford they joined the column to relieve Fort Pierson. On 2 Apr 1879, the battalion distinguished itself at the Battle of Gingindlovu and in Jun 1879 participated in the advance on Ulundi under Sir Garnet Wolseley and the subsequent pursuit and capture of the Zulu King Cetswayo. The battalion remained in Natal after the war and was stationed at Pietermaritzburg until the Transvaal Boers under the leadership of General Petrus Johannes Joubert invaded Northern Natal in 1881 at the start of the First Anglo Boer War. They fought at the Battle of Laing's Nek on 28 Jan 1881, at the Battle of Ingogo (or Schuinshoogte) on 8 Feb 1881 and at the Battle of Majuba Hill on 27 Feb 1881. Private Hurley died some 6 months after the war ended. He was buried in Mount Prospect Cemetery.
