Private (or Bandsman) B Lewis, 99th The Duke of Edinburgh's (Lanarkshire) Regiment of Foot. He was part of Colonel Pearson's column that following the victory over the Zulus at Nyezane, made for the abandoned mission station in Eshowe which was prepared for defence. The mounted troops were sent back to the Tugela and the remaining troops became under seige from the Zulus until relieved on 3 Apr 1879. Private Lewis died from enteric fever (typhoid) at Fort Eshowe during the seige on 28 Mar 1879. His grave marker can be seen at:
