Joyce was born on September 8, 1937, to Victor and Alice (Richmond) Edlin in Jackson, MN. She grew up in Jackson and graduated from Jackson High School in 1955. After high school, Joyce attended St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN, where she graduated with a degree in nursing in 1958. After college, she married Donald Charles Bauman in December 1958. Joyce worked as a nurse while the couple farmed near Canby and Holland, MN. In 1963, Donald passed away due to an automobile accident. Joyce moved to Pipestone, MN, and continued her work as a nurse. In October 1966, Joyce married Gordon Brodersen. The couple moved to a farm near Elkton, where they raised their family. Gordon passed away in 2013 at which time Joyce moved to Brookings.

Joyce dedicated her life to her children and the family farm. As a dairy farmer's wife, she helped with the milking chores twice a day, every day. She faithfully bottle fed and cared for the baby calves. Every summer she planted a large vegetable garden and flower gardens. She canned and froze everything possible to help support the family. Joyce enjoyed her women's club, Wednesday morning coffee group and playing cards at the senior center. Joyce will be remembered for her smile, kindness, love for baking, sewing and reading, gardening and growing flowers. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and teaching them how to bake. While living near Elkton, Joyce was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church.

Survivors include her seven children: Don (Sherry) Bauman, Elkton; Deb (Bruce) Burckhardt, Brookings; Jerry (Leslie) Bauman, Hardwick, MN; Janet (Bryan) Brockberg, Pipestone, MN; JoAnn (Jeff) Lee, Brookings; Jean (Steve) Chappell, Clear Lake, IA; Jeanette (Jon Dodson) Brodersen, Hudson, OH; 12 grandchildren: Adam, Brandon, Ashley, Mitch, Hayden, Justin, Andy, Jasper, Gavin, Ellen, Lance, Steph; 25 great-grandchildren: Braeden, Bergan, Barrett, Ethan, Owen, Ava, Kaleb, Phoenix, Caradee, Ty, Hallee, Brooks, Brantley, Maverick, Avery, Kenzley, Evelyn, Weston, Sawyer, Nico, Pierce, Cody, Michael, Lexy, Cortney; 5 sisters: Jacqueline Miller, Janet Martin, Judy Karvonen, Harriet (Jerry) Russeth, Jennifer (Gary) Cox, 2 brothers: John (Pam) Edlin, Dr. Jim (Margaret) Edlin, and 1 sister-in-law: Nancy Edlin.
