In 1860, he was a laborer living in McVeytown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Nothing has yet been found on his parents.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in McVeytown August 18, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Griffin, Lewinsville, Fairfax County, Virginia, October 24 as a private with Co. K, 49th Pennsylvania Infantry. On January 11, 1863, the entire company consolidated with others in the regiment, George going to Co. B. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 24, 1863, at Brandy Station, Virginia, and honorably discharged with his company July 15, 1865.

He married Maryland-born Anna Benner ca. 1866 and fathered Wiley (b. @1868), Harry (b. 01/01/70), George G. (b. 11/18/71), Benton (b. @1875), Nellie (b. @1877), Clara (b. 05/??/80), Margaret (b. 01/16/82 - married a Branch), and Anna (b. 09/??/89). The 1900 census lists all his children as born in Maryland despite the fact that he is in the 1880 census living in Steelton, Dauphin County, and appears in no Maryland census either that year or 1870. He died at his home reportedly from pneumonia.

His birth year is a subject for debate, and 1845 may not be correct.
1. His military records do not agree on his age. The Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS entry claims he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen, but the age in the company register for Co. B is twenty-one (Co. K entry contains no dates), the latter possibly reflecting his re-enlistment age despite being listed with his original enlistment date.
2. He is in the 1860 census as an eighteen-year-old, thirty-six in the 1880 census, and 1900 claims a March 1844 birth. He is so far not found in other censuses.
3. His obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph claims he died at the age of fifty-seven.
