Joseph Shelley, 66 years old, the proprietor of the Shelley Undertaking Company of San Antonio, Texas, and one of the best known members of his profession in Texas, died in 1922 at his home in San Antonio. He had been in poor health for some time. Death was due to complication of internal troubles.

Mr. Shelley was born in New York City. He moved to Texas in 1875, coming to Dallas and had since resided in this state.

In 1890 he moved from Dallas to San Antonio where he was engaged in the funeral business.

He was a former president of the Texas Embalmers' Association and a former member of the State Board of Embalmers. During his long residence in San Antonio, he had made many friends who will feel his death deeply. He was a man of great kindness of heart and wide, although unostentatious, charities.

Mr. Shelley is survived by his widow, Mrs. Viola Smith Shelley; a brother, James H. Shelley of Danbury, Conn.; and by four sisters, Mrs. Fannie Avery and Mrs. Agnes Finch, both of South Norwalk, Conn.; Mrs. Kate Fairbanks of Darien, Conn., and Mrs. Josephine Warren of Bethel, Conn.

Mr. Shelly was a member of the Knights of Pythias, and the funeral services were under the direction of that order. The Rev. T.C. Long, pastor of the Los Angeles Heights Baptist Church, conducted the services.

Mr. Shelley was also a member of the Odd Fellows, the Red Men, the Eagles and the Union Society.

Honorary pallbearers were the funeral directors and salesmen of funeral supplies residing in San Antio, and C.B. Sutherland, undertaker of Corsicana; A.B. Rogers, undertaker of San Marcos; George W. Loudermilk, prominent Dallas undertaker;and Tom W. Wright, Temple undertaker.

Active pallbearers were L. C. Puckett, Waco undertaker; George A. Brewer, elite Dallas undertaker; C.B. Cook, Austin undertaker; H.F. Spelman, Fort Worth undertaker; R.B. Leatherwood, Hillsboro undertaker; and H.D. Haskins of Dallas, a traveling salesman who has known Mr. Shelley for 25 years.

There was an unusually large number of flowers and the cortege was very long, embracing over 100 cars.

Interment was in Mission Burial Park in San Antonio. Paul Riebe, longtime prominent undertaker of San Antonio and founder of Riebe Undertaking Co., was in charge of the funeral, being assisted by J.H. McCollum of Hagy & McCollum Undertaking Co. of San Antonio.
