Alice Bassett was born on June 12th, 1850 in Kalida, Ohio to Philo C. Bassett and Jane Elizabeth Lee. Alice's parents were both born in the state of New York both emigrated separately to Kalida. Philo is present in Kalida by July 22, 1845, advertising in the local paper as the operator of the Tin Shop. Jane came to Kalida with her parents, Ira and Nanvy, in 1848. In 1848, Philo and Jane were married in Franklin County, Ohio.

According to the 1850 Census, Philo and Jane were living in Kalida, Ohio where Philo was listed as a tinner. Alice was the eldest child with at least 2 more children being born to this family. Sister, Eva Bassett was born in Kalida in 1853 and that same year, Alice passed away on the 29th of May in 1853, at the age of 2 years 11 months and 17 days.

Alice's obituary includes a beautiful hymn by author Mrs. Hemans from the book, Kind Words: a new collection of hymns and tunes for Sunday schools and the social circle. After the birth of Eva and the death of Alice, the Bassett's decided to move to Michigan where Philo left his tinning profession to pursue the calling of Clergyman. Alice is left here, buried with her maternal grandparents, Ira and Nancy Lee.

Alice's headstone is a small tablet style memorial made of white marble with 3 breaks. The upper right-hand corner containing the letter E, is still missing. Since Alice was born after the polling of the 1850 census and died 2 years later this small stone is the only physical evidence left of Alice's existence, thou brief still was still impressionable to those around her.
