Known to Dakota people as Oheyawahi, "the hill much visited," Pilot Knob is a sacred site at Mendota. This painting shows a view of the mouth of the St. Peters River (Minnesota River) at Mendota Heights, Minn. This location is considered by some Dakota to be the site of Dakota creation.

Chief Cloudman was born in his father's village about 8 miles from Mendota.

In the 1830's, Samuel and Gideon Pond helped establish missions at Chief Cloudman's Dakota village in between Lakes Calhoun and Harriet. This memorial tablet marks the site of the first house and mission station built in Minneapolis, erected by Samuel and Gideon Pond at Thirty Fifth Street and Calhoun Boulevard. Made of peeled logs and a bark roof, it was a two room cabin.

"On the hill above was erected the first dwelling in Minneapolis by Samuel W. and Gideon H. Pond, Missionaries to the Indians, June 1834. Dedicated by the Native Sons of Minnesota May 30, 1908."

View of Fort Snelling from the river bank. Chief Cloud Man died at Fort Snelling in 1863 and was buried somewhere on the banks of the Minnesota river in view of the fort.

Fort Snelling is located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. The Dakota called this place Ha-Ha Mdo-Te, which translates to "junction of two rivers," the Dakota name from which the town of Mendota got its name. The Mendota area was also Chief Cloud Man's place of birth.
