Robert Earl Thorp, son of George Washington THORP and Jane Elizabeth (BALL) THORP was born 28 November 1883 in Seneca, Newton Co., MO and died 15 January 1961 in Green Cove Springs, Clay Co., FL. His original name was Rantsler Earl, but he changed it to Robert when it caused difficulties and confusion in spelling. He went by Earl. He was married on 19 June 1920 in Jacksonville, FL to Augusta Victoria PFLUG.

From information supplied by his daughter, Alice Marie:

1885 - Moved with his family to Conway Springs, KS. Grew up in father 's blacksmith shop and Old Man Fitch's gun shop. Attended Conway Springs Normal and Business College. Spent summers working on ranches in Colorado , Oklahoma, Texas, and Mexico.

1901 - Joined the army, went to Manila.

1902 - Got into an ambush at San Pedro Makadi and was shot in the head. Discharged after many weeks in First Reserve Hospital in Manila and returned to U.S.

1903 - Went to sea on sailing ship "Astral" from San Francisco to New York around Cape Horn. Continued with other sailing trips across the world through 1909.

1911 - Returned to Kansas, operating his own machine and welding shop in Conway Springs.

1916 - Went to Florida with father and mother, driving a 1914 Model T Ford.

1918 - Joined the Navy. Yachting cruise on Submarine Chaser to Adriatic, Base 25, Corfu, Greece. Later Spalato, Dalmatia. Shoulder knocked out of place by sledge hammer flying off handle.

1919 - American Relief Administration, Trieste, with Hoover.

1920 - Back to U.S. and to Florida where he was married.

1942 to 1945 - Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, Honolulu, HI.
