Born in North Carolina, Francis Augustus Cox was the son of William Ruffin Cox and Fannie Lyman Cox; and brother of Major General Albert Lyman Cox. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia Law School.
After serving in France with the Army in World War I, he decided to enter the ministry. He graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria and went to China in 1921 as a missionary.
Dr. Cox became chancellor of the St. John's University in Shanghai and also was in charge of Episcopal missions in China. He was held prisoner by the Japanese at the notorious Bridgehouse Prison in Shanghai in 1942, then returned to the USA that year on an exchange ship, the Gripsholm.
His wife, Mary Moncure Cox, died exactly two years before him on July 12, 1976.
