He enlisted at Middletown, Dauphin County PA, on October 18, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg on October 28. Severely wounded at the battle of Fair Oaks on May 31, 1862, he died in a Philadelphia military hospital.
He married Ann Witmer "between Christmas and New Year" December 1849 in Newberry Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Christiann "Christy" (b. 03/13/49), Elizabeth (b. 09/18/51), John (b. 10/12/53), Ada (b. 05/29/55), Lucinda (b. 10/24/57), and Elizabeth (b. 07/19/60). In 1860, he was a shoemaker presumably living in Newberry Township, although he is not in that census.
