Humberto Acabal, 11, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at McAllen Medical Center. 

He was born in McAllen and had lived in Alamo all of his life. He was a student at D.M. Sauceda Middle School in Donna. 

Humberto is survived by his parents, Julia Esparza and Everardo Acabal; a sister, Olivia Acabal; a brother, Everardo Acabal, Jr.; maternal grandparents, Sofia and Jose Angel Esparza, all of Alamo; paternal grandparents, Juan Acabal and Maria Lopez, of Guatemala; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary today, March 16, 2008, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo. Interment will follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna. 

Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.


Family and friends are expected to say goodbye on Monday to a Donna sixth grader who was killed in a freak accident that sent debris flying into a school bus.


Eleven-year-old Humberto Acabal was on his way home for Spring Break on Friday afternoon.


Police say a pickup truck lost control and crashed into a Casa Linda sign and sending debris flying towards a school bus carrying Humberto, his older brother Everardo Acabal, Jr. and seven other students from Dora Sauceda Middle School.


The debris struck went through the bus and killed Acabal in front of his brother and the others.
