Excerpts from his death notice indicate he was editor and proprietor of first newspaper published in Wheeling, which it states was about 1808. He erected the paper mill in Fulton, Ohio County, Virginia before West Virginia statehood.

Susan may be his second wife. Some records give his wife as Sarah Dickson or Hulse. Some records of his children give mother's name Sarah.

An article in Wheeling Register Feb 1867, reflected on an 1839 Wheeling Directory and noted a listing for the Fulton Paper Mill of A. Armstrong & Co. Two of his sons became partners in his paper mill business. His son Hiram who later lived in Kentucky where he took care of a paper warehouse returned to work with his father in WV.

A daughter Sarah Armstrong born 1821 Ohio, married William Goodrich. She is mentioned on obit of her brother Hiram B. Armstrong as living in Urbana, Ohio.

Son Joseph S Armstrong born abt 1817/1818 Ohio, married Adeline Diven, Sept 15, 1842, Ohio County, VA/WV. They reside adjacent to James and Susan on 1850 census, where Joseph is an engineer, have 3 children. The family lives in Fulton on 1860 census.

Son John H. Armstrong 45 a paper finisher appears on 1870 census, Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio with wife Amelia 40 and 4 children.

It is thought that his brother Thomas Armstrong is memorial 86331290.

His will brought to probate Oct 1868, Warren Hollister was appointed administrator.
He is his son-in-law, as Elizabeth Armstrong married Warren Hollister. Oct 27, 1846, Wheeling. They are both buried in Linwood Cemetery, Belmont, Ohio.
