Obituary from The Wrangell Sentinel - Thursday, April 24, 1924: Alfred Ahrenstedt Dies of Pneumonia. Alfred Ahrenstedt, aged 60 years, died in Wrangell at 10:30 A. M. Wednesday morning. The funeral took place this afternoon under the auspices of Wrangell Igloo No. 21 Pioneers of Alaska with Staff-Captain W. J. Carruthers officiating. On Monday friends of Mr. Ahrenstedt discovered that he was seriously ill in his small boat at the head of the bay. He was moved to one of the cabins on the Lemieux dock, and W. E. Lloyd of the Pioneers lodge undertook the task of caring for him under the doctor's direction. Mr. Lloyd was assisted by Hon. W. D. Grant, Paddy Coburn, L. M. Churchill and other pioneers. In fact all the old timers, whether members of the Pioneer organization or not, let it be known that they were ready to do anything in their power to help the patient. From the time Mr. Ahrenstedt's illness became known there was little hope for his recovery. He had pneumonia and had been alone in a damp gasboat without attention until he was nearer death than alive when he was moved into town. Alfred Ahrenstedt was born in Sweden April 29, 1863. He first came to Alaska during the Klondike rush in 1897. He spent considerable time in the Interior and was thoroughly familiar with the country along the Yukon from White Horse to Nome. Nothing is known of his relatives except that he has a nephew somewhere in the State of Illinois. Mr. Ahrenstedt was a man of many admirable traits, and was respected and beloved generally by those who knew him. He had resided in Wrangell since 1911.
